The purpose of my work is to communicate the spiritual aspects of my subjects through the use of color, shape and texture. I believe color, shape and texture to be a route to the spiritual. I strive to transcend the physical world in the subjects I paint, to reach the metaphysical - to provide a transformation of consciousness.
When painting, I adhere to the Zen Buddhist philosophy, specifically the ideas that everything one needs can be found within and that enlightenment is attained through meditation and direct intuitive insight. Thus, I search within myself for the direct intuitive, allowing the appropriate insight and response in my work to arise naturally and spontaneously. I search within myself for the direct intuitive. In this manner, I find myself in agreement with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) in their quest to express spiritual truths through their art.
My approach to painting can not be found in a book. I have no interest in merely copying the outward appearance of things. Painting is my calling.
